Sociology Honors Thesis — Love in The Time of Corona — 2020-2021
Using the frameworks laid out in Sexual Citizens (Hirsch and Khan 2020), this thesis examines the role that hooking up plays in the forging of long-standing social connections and groups on Oberlin’s campus before the COVID-19 pandemic. Notably, I employ the concepts of sexual citizenship, or the reciprocal agency one feels in an encounter; sexual geography, or how the participants’ relationship to the physical space where the encounter occurs or is initiated alters one’s agency; and sexual projects, or the sexual and/or social goal one hopes to achieve via the encounter, to explore how these sexual encounters are translated into social capital and status.
As a secondary focus, my research explores how the loss of third places, spaces which are neither home nor work, in the Covid-19 pandemic will continue to affect students’ reasons to participate in hookup culture, the ability to use casual sexual relationships to define their social circles, and the relationships between self-exploration and establishment in social groups.
This research was awarded Highest Honors by the College and was funded by the Jerome Davis Research Grant. I received the Comfort Starr Prize for Excellence by the College for my contribution to the field. Key takeaways were incorporated into the curriculum of the First Year mandatory sexual assualt workshop and featured in two dedicated articles in the Oberlin Review.
In 2022, I was a featured guest on the WUNC Podcast, Embodied. The episode, Hooked Up, The Myth of No Strings Attached, was re-aired in 2023 due to its popularity.
